SC Meeting: April 7, 2026

At the April 7 School Committee Meeting there was a discussion of the Pollard Middle School Schematic Design, High School Faith-Based Groups, and the Eliot Elementary School Improvement Plan. The Committee also recognized the Pollard Tenacity Challenge Championship team and received an update from the Student Advisory to the School Committee.

Superintendent Gutekanst recognized Pollard Tenacity Challenge Championship team, and the team members described their project and key takeaways.

DISCUSSION ITEMS

Pollard Middle School Schematic Design Update

Dr. Gutekanst, Co-Chair Alisa Skatrud and Michael Greis provided an update of the Pollard Middle School Schematic Design, following an active SC Open House on March 28, 2026. The School Committee engaged in a brief discussion on the following topics:

  • Abutter engagement
  • Design adjustments to interior and exterior, which are being considered with multiple stakeholders
  • Traffic study, tree plan and financial analysis

High School Faith-Based Groups
NHS Students, Sam Cornell, Lily Fogelman, Brianna Sickmier and Jana Ghbeis provided an update on the following High School Faith-Based Groups:

  • The Jewish Student Union provided examples of recent faith-based events, discussion and community engagement.
  • The Christian Student Union provided an update on community outreach and faith exploration activities.
  • The Muslim Student Union provided an update on recent activities developed to foster an environment of connection, support and representation.

Student Advisory to the School Committee Update

NHS Students Jack Arvedon, Maeve Newman, Sabrina Rauch and Angelo (AJ) Giannacopoulos provided the Needham High School Student Advisory update. The students highlighted the following:

  • 9th Grade Update: Freshmen are stepping up and getting involved at the high school. They are integrating into the community and engaged in event planning and fundraising.
  • 10th Grade Update: The sophomores are dedicated to their academics and enthusiastic about their second-year experience. They are flexible and resilient, and looking forward to hosting an underclass dance to enhance the sense of community in the freshman and sophomore classes.
  • 11th Grade Update: Juniors are embracing the challenges and rigor of their third year. They are engaging in new electives, course selection and participating in workshops about the “common app.” Juniors are looking forward to the harbor cruise and planning for long-awaited class events.
  • 12th Grade Update: Seniors are embracing excitement and anticipation of their last year at NHS. They are celebrating successes in college applications and building excitement for prom.
  • At Large: Speak-Out was a success. Subcommittees are active.
  • Student Life: Students have adapted to cell phone policy. Senior Life: Seniors are full of excitement and uncertainty. They are saying goodbye while looking ahead.

Eliot Elementary School Improvement Plan
Karen Rondon-Bourn, Principal, and several teachers, parents and staff presented on the Eliot School Improvement Plan. The presentation highlighted the following topics:

  • The School Improvement Plan is built on academic data, SEL data, family data and demographic data and feedback from parents, teachers and staff.
  • Confident Mathematicians: This goal looks to develop “mathematicians with math literacy.”
  • Lifelong Reader and Writers: Implementation of the ARC literacy program is key to achieving this goal.
  • Interdisciplinary Learning: To achieve this goal, students will have enhanced opportunities to connect concepts across different subjects.
  • Tier 2 and Tier 3 Intervention: This plan focuses on creating robust Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention structures in literacy, math and social-emotional learning.
  • Develop Community Members: This goal focuses on professional development initiatives, mentorship, student leadership and empowerment within the community.
  • Embrace Diversity: Eliot aims to celebrate its unique, diverse community including by providing professional learning to better serve multilingual learning and ensure students are exposed to diverse content and perspectives.
  • Family Partnership: This goal aims to develop strong relationships between families and the school in promoting child well-being, education and growth.
