The December 2 School Committee meeting focused on Fair Share Amendment Funding, Pollard Middle School Building Project Feasibility Update, and Approval of Unit B Collective Bargaining Contract (2025–2028).
Superintendent Comments– Fair Share Amendment Funding
- The district received notice, via State Senator Becca Rausch, that Needham will receive $100,000 from the Commonwealth. These funds come from the Fair Share Amendment (“millionaire’s tax”), which supports education and transportation.
- Funds must still be formally applied for, but they are available and earmarked for a new preschool playground.

Pollard Middle School Building Project Feasibility Update
- Extensive work has occurred over the past 10–11 months: 71+ meetings, including 43 committee meetings (School Building Committee + School Committee).
- Last Monday, the School Building Committee voted on four motions that:
- Move forward with a new grade 6–8 middle school.
- Plan a new construction model.
- Include a 750-seat auditorium.
- Identify the Pollard site as the location.
- Two final design options (5D and 5E) will be submitted in the December report.
- Dec. 15–16, 2025: Preferred Schematic Report submitted to MSBA.
- Nov. 2026: Anticipated community vote to approve funding for the new middle school.
- 2027–2028: Construction documents created and project bid.
- 2030 (August): Projected opening of the new Pollard Middle School.
- School Committee engaged in discussion, expressed their appreciation for all of the hard work of the PPBC/SBC and design team, and thanked the community for their engagement in this process so far.
ACTION ITEMS
Approval of Unit B Collective Bargaining Contract (2025–2028): Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, Alexandra Montes McNeil presented the Unit B Collective Bargaining Contract. More details can be found in the packet.
- Unit B includes administrators, excluding principals and those on individual contracts.
- The new agreement:
- Balances administrator needs with financial responsibility to the town.
- Enhances parental/family leave, professional development, and workload considerations.
- The Superintendent acknowledged the positive, collaborative nature of negotiations—unlike the difficulties seen in other communities.
- The School Committee voted to approve the 2025–2028 Unit B contract (7-0-0).
- Upcoming negotiations:
- Unit C (Instructional Assistants)
- Unit D (Clerical/Technical Staff)
- Unit E (Cafeteria Workers)
Recommendation to Submit Preferred Schematic Report (PSR) to MSBA
- Motion before the Committee: Recommend that the Permanent Public Building Committee/School Building Committee (PPBC/SBC) submit the Preferred Schematic Report to the MSBA.
- Report reflects:
- New construction
- Located at the current Pollard site
- Grades 6–8 configuration
- 750-seat auditorium
- Motion was seconded and unanimously approved (7-0-0).
- This moves the Pollard Middle School project forward to the next MSBA stage.
