At the January 27 School Committee Meeting there was a continuation of the FY26 Budget Discussion and then the School Committee voted on the FY26 Superintendent’s School Operating Budget Request.

DISCUSSION ITEMS
FY26 Budget Discussion – Dr. Gutekanst shared his final FY26 School Operating Budget recommendation. Detailed slides & information can be found in the SC Packet.
- The FY26 Budget recommendation has been significantly reduced since December following updated financial information from the Town Manager.
- Ultimately the district still has the resources and staff to appropriately support our students.
- Voluntary teacher retirement incentive is a key part of this budget reduction. Two secondary level teachers will not be replaced as their classes can be absorbed into existing classes. There will be salary savings in the other positions.
- Many key requests are still funded in the budget, including increased guidance counselors at the elementary level, an additional teacher at Newman, a teacher for Visually Impaired students, as well as additional transportation and software funds.
- Town IT budget has not changed from what was previously presented.
School budget funding comes from several sources:
- The largest source of revenue for school & town services is Needham real estate and excise taxes.
- Another source of significant funding for the schools is MA State Grants including the Chapter 70 formula which provides a per pupil cost for every child enrolled in NPS and Circuit Breaker funding which reimburses a portion of Special Education tuition.
- Federal Grants also provide about $1.5 million annually primarily for Special Education.
- Fees for bus services, athletics, fine & performing arts also help support the costs of those activities.
- Donations & grants from Athletic Boosters, Friends of Music, and the Needham Education Foundation provide support as well.
