At the June 2 School Committee Meeting there was discussion of updates to the Pollard Middle School Schematic Design, the Strategic Plan Action Steps, and a discussion on implementation of the Canvas Learning Management System.

Canvas Learning Management System Implementation Update
Carmen Williams, Asst. Superintendent for Instruction and Innovation, and Chris Gosselin, Dir. of Instructional Technology and Innovation, K-12 presented an update on implementation of the Canvas Learning Management System
The School Committee engaged in a robust discussion about Canvas and its anticipated benefits and challenges.
The district will be implementing the Canvas Learning Management System after several years of study and research.
Canvas will replace Google Classroom and was chosen due to its potential to advance district priorities in student growth, innovation, community communication and technical infrastructure.
Canvas aligns with the district’s priorities and strategic objectives.
This past year, teachers and leaders have been engaged in workshops and trainings on various topics related to the platform. The presenters highlighted coaching and visits from users in other towns as part of the professional learning phase. An overview of implementation is available in the slides and below.
The district is moving cautiously in light of recent Canvas data breach; Needham data was not involved.
The presenters acknowledged that it will take time (3-5 years) for full implementation due to a learning curve.
Pollard Middle School Schematic Design Update
Jessica Downey, Meryl Nistler, Building and Design Dept, Tina Stanaslowski, HMFH, provided an update on the Pollard Middle School Project Schematic Design, together.
- School Committee to vote on Schematic Design at the June 16, 2026 meeting.
- Schematic Design considers the progressive learning journey—from exploration (6th) to foundation (7th) and action (8th).
- Proposed design still values separation among the classes.
- Proposed design values more cohesion in accessibility of special education resources.
- Presenters provided an overview of floorplans submitted to MSBA, DESE, can be found in the packet on pages 47-49.
- Middle school schedule also considered in developing schematic design, i.e., avoid space conflicts.
- Project Schedule:
- Submission for MSBA anticipated at the end of this month; MSBA Board approval at end of August.
- Town Meeting and community override vote this Fall, followed by Design Development.
- Presenters also gave an overview of identified cost savings, including;

Strategic Plan Action Steps Update
Dr. Gutekanst, Anne Gulati, Asst. Superintendent for Finance and Operations, Mary Lammi, Asst. Superintendent for Student Support Services, Alexandra Montes McNeil, Asst. Superintendent for Human Resources and Carmen Williams, Asst. Superintendent for Instruction and Innovation presented on 2026 Actions in support of the District’s Strategic Plan.
- Plan is built on four core priorities that are executed using the Portrait of a Needham Graduate competencies: Growth, Innovation, Communication and Infrastructure
- The Plan has achieved the following in 2025-2026:
- Growth: Pilot evidence-based literacy curriculum in every elementary classroom and select a new program.
- Innovation: Act on the Intensive Learning Center program review findings to enhance coherence, inclusiveness, and effectiveness contributing to the district’s commitment to inclusive education and equitable student outcomes and develop a framework and structure for using AI responsibly to enhance and strengthen student learning, administrative processes and district priorities.
- Communication: Implement the initial phase of Canvas, a learning management system that will enhance teacher instructional tools, and promote stronger family partnerships.
- Infrastructure
- Engage in a collaborative design process of a new Pollard School with the MSBA including a communication plan to inform and engage stakeholders during the transition.
- Procure and begin the implementation of a new Town-wide financial application that will improve and enhance business (HR, Payroll, Billing, Collection) processes.
- Adapt and adopt the 2024 teacher evaluation rubric with consideration of the Needham Public Schools Strategic Plan.
- Implement year 2 of a 3-year professional learning program (Portrait of A Needham Educator) linked to a growth-focused employee supervision & evaluation process.
