At the November 18th School Committee Meeting there was discussion of the Needham Education Foundation (NEF) Fall Grants, a 2026-2027 School Calendar proposal, and updates for the Pollard Middle School Project.

- School Committee Chair thanks individuals who came to Pollard School Project meetings on 11/15 and 11/17.
Superintendent’s Comments
- Recognition of Needham High School senior Matias Welch who received a National Speech and Debate Academic All-American Award
- Recognition of Needham High School athlete Greta Hammer who finished 2nd place in the MIAA Cross Country Championship
- Dr. Gutekanst wishes everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and thanks all the NPS Staff for their hard work.

Needham Education Foundation (NEF) Fall Grants – presented by NEF Fall Grant Chairs Emily Dill and Kristi Daly
- This fall NEF received 6 applications and all were approved (all grants were for elementary schools as there were no applications from the secondary level).
- Grants totaled $34,051. A link to full descriptions of the grants can be found on the NEF website.
- School Committee members thanked the NEF and the community for providing innovative, educational opportunities for the schools.
2026-2027 School Calendar Proposal – presented by Dr. Gutekanst
- Next year the district hopes to present a 2 year calendar
- The 2026-27 calendar will be similar in structure to the 2025-26 calendar and the proposed start date for students is 9/2 (Wednesday before Labor Day).
- If there are no snow days, the last day of school will be a half day after a 3 day weekend due to Juneteenth holiday. Dr. Gutekanst presented an option to end school before the 3 day weekend by making the Wednesday (11/25) before Thanksgiving a half day instead of a day off. There was discussion by School Committee members for concern of student attendance on that half day.
- School Committee members inquired about removing Good Friday as a holiday or having school on Election Day. School Committee members and Dr. Gutekanst had robust discussion about the concerns of removing holidays and logistical problems for Election Day at Newman Elementary since it is a voting center for the town.
Pollard Middle School Building Project Feasibility Study Update – presented by Dr Gutekanst
- Pollard Open House and Public Hearing were well attended and lots of questions and comments were received. In the last 12 months School Committee has hosted or participated in at least 55 community engagements and public meetings about Pollard Feasibility.
- School Committee members unanimously agree to support 6-8 grade configuration and 750 seat theater. All members agree to explore only new construction on either Pollard or DeFazio.
- Building new construction at DeFazio would require the use of a couple of the fields that are currently under Park & Rec jurisdiction. These fields would be replaced on the Pollard site once current school is demolished.
- Dr. Gutekanst presented a potential land swap with Parks and Rec for new school construction at DeFazio: Parks and Rec would swap 6 acres at DeFazio for 9.8 acres at Pollard. The School Committee would retain 5.5 acres at Pollard.
- School Committee members had a robust discussion about the net benefits from this land swap for the community, including one additional new athletic field, new tot lot, and improved parking.
- Dr. Gutekanst presented estimated tax increases for the average single family home. “For the average single family home worth $1,464,398, annual property taxes would increase $147-2,040 per year and would peak at $2,040 in 2032.”
- Still waiting for updated cost estimates and traffic analysis which should be received this week.
- These options will be discussed further at the All Boards Summit on Nov 24
