Needham High School Student Advisory to the School Committee Quarterly Update
Jack Arvedon (Class of 2027) and Sabrina Rauch (Class of 2028) provided quarterly update on current events at Needham High School.
- 10th Grade Update:
- Students already involved in wide variety of clubs and athletics at NHS
- Fall Festival on October 25, 2025 for Needham children
- 11th Grade Update:
- Adjusting well to role as “upper classmen”
- Fundraising is underway; brainstorming additional fundraising opportunities to prepare for class activities
- 12th Grade Update
- Balancing college essays, deadlines, decisions with grace and flexibility
- Class engaged in spirit and community building—savoring their final moments at NHS
- At Large
- Student council has established 6 focus groups: editing and updating student council constitution; working on new ID system for lunch and vending; availability of online payment; organizing upper/lower parking; updating outdated student council website; working on standardization of grading across classes
- Positive reviews on phone-free classrooms, but work to be done on “power down/reverse facing” mandate

2025 MCAS Score Summary Report
Dr. Carmen Williams, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Innovation provided an update on the 2025 MCAS scores, together with Jessica Peterson, Newman School Principal, Kathleen Hubbard, K-5 Math Coordinator and Jessica R. - MCAS Accountability Score is up from 2024—85% in 2024 to 93% in 2025
- Highest ranked district in the Commonwealth
- Score is a product of weighted formula based on multi-year data; this number reflects growth and demonstrates improvement
- Dr. Williams presented data on student performance and growth in tested areas of ELA, math and science on grade level basis
- Data reflects some recovery from COVID-era learning loss
- Work remains to be done in areas of chronic absenteeism, closing opportunity and performance gaps among special education, low-income and English Language Learners, and adjusting to new state legislation regarding high school MCAS assessment (no longer a HS graduation requirement at state level; remains requirement in Needham for purposes of data capture)
