At the September 16 School Committee Meeting, there was a discussion of the opening of the 2025-26 school year, the draft fiscal year 2027-31 (FY26-31) capital improvement program requests, a Pollard building project feasibility study update, and the 2025-26 School Committee subcommittee assignments.
The meeting was opened by the Needham High School Chorale and string quartet performing the Star-Spangled Banner and Fly Away Home.
School Committee member Sri Baqri was traveling and unable to attend the meeting.

- Thank you to all of the community members who came to last week’s community meeting regarding the Pollard project.
Superintendent Comments
- Last week, Dr. Gutekanst joined Needham High School students in unveiling a plaque recognizing Needham High School as the Best Buddies Massachusetts Chapter of the Year.
- Dr. Gutekanst recognized middle school student Riley Chan, who was one of only 11 middle school students to receive an honorable mention award in NPR’s 2025 Student Podcast Challenge. Her podcast is titled “Why Schools Need More Guidance Counselors,” and is available on soundcloud.

Opening of 2025-26 School Year Update
Dan Gutekanst, Superintendent, Anne Gulati, Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations, Alexandra Montes McNeil, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, and Shane Marchand, Transportation Director, updated the School Committee on enrollment, human resources, transportation, and nutrition services in the first few weeks of the school year.

Draft FY27-31 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) Requests
Dan Gutekanst, Superintendent, and Anne Gulati, Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations discussed the capital improvement plan requests for FY 27-31. As part of the budget development process, the school administration has discussed and identified capital items for submission. The capital requests list has been developed in collaboration with school and Town staff. The School Committee will be asked to vote on the Capital Improvement Plan requests at the October 7, 2025 meeting.

- Copier and vehicle replacement are status quo

- Resubmitted the request that was not funded last year for risers and acoustical shells for school productions

- A new design has been developed to relocate it from its current location to the large grassy area to the left of the Newman main entrance because of ongoing and overwhelming complications with renovating on the existing site.
- Theatrical sound and lighting upgrades
- The high school auditorium upgrades had to be pushed back to FY28-29 because of the need to replace the high school rooftop HVAC units which are leaking. As these units are above the auditorium, they want to ensure that this issue is resolved before adding new equipment.

Pollard Building Project Feasibility Update
Dan Gutekanst provided an update on the Pollard building project.

- There will be an All Boards Meeting on Thursday, September 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Broadmeadow School to discuss continuing to look at both the Pollard and DeFazio sites for the future Pollard school. The School Committee, Select Board, Finance Committee, Conservation Committee, Planning Board, Park and Recreation Commission, and Permanent Public Building Committee will be participating in the meeting. The public is invited to attend in person or virtually.
- The MSBA is willing to accept a supplemental report that removes one or more of the 7 options that have already been submitted if any of those options should be deemed not viable.

Michael O’Brien, School Committee chair, and Alisa Skatrud, School Committee vice-chair, presented the School Committee subcommittee assignments for the 2025-26 school year which can be found on pages 150-151 in the packet.

- Monday, September 29 from 5-6 pm at the Emery Grover Building
- The Great Hall Concert Series’ first concert will be on Saturday, September 20. This show is sold out already.
- The Needham Harvest Fair is on Sunday, October 5th from 11:00 – 3:00 at Greene’s Field.
The next School Committee Meeting will be October 7, 2025 at 6:30pm.
